How to Remove Location and EXIF Data from Photos

Every photo your iPhone takes carries a hidden payload: the GPS coordinates of where you stood, the exact time, your phone model, and camera settings. Share the file directly, and that data often travels with it. A photo of your morning coffee can quietly disclose your home address.

What EXIF data actually contains

EXIF is the metadata block written into JPEG and HEIC files at capture. The privacy-relevant fields are the GPS coordinates (precise to the meter), the timestamp (to the second), and the device make and model. None of this is visible in the picture — it is readable by anyone who receives the file and knows where to look, which takes about two taps.

Step 1: Find out what your photos are carrying

Step 2: Strip the data

1. Select the photos you plan to share.
2. Toggle Strip GPS Location to remove coordinates, or Strip All EXIF Data to remove everything — camera, date, GPS, all of it.
3. Convert. The output files are clean; your originals keep their metadata for your own records.

That last point is the right default: your own library keeps full metadata (useful for search and organization), while the copies that leave your phone carry only the image.

When to strip what

• GPS only: selling something online, posting publicly, sharing with strangers. The date and camera info are usually harmless; the location is not.
• All EXIF: anything sensitive — documents, screenshots with context, photos where even the timestamp says too much.
• Nothing: photos staying inside your own devices and backups. Metadata is genuinely useful there.

Everything runs on-device. Ironically, some web-based "EXIF removers" require uploading your photo — location data and all — to a server first. Cleaning locally avoids the contradiction.
