How touch detection works
Your iPhone's motion sensors register even small movements. While protection is armed, Device Finder monitors those sensors; when the phone is lifted, slid, or grabbed, a countdown starts. If the alarm is not dismissed in time, a loud alert fires — through silent mode, at full volume. The adjustable grace period is the difference between a usable alarm and a hair trigger: set it long enough that you can pick up your own phone and dismiss it, short enough that someone walking away with it cannot get far quietly.
Arming it
- Open Device Finder and go to the Security section.
- Activate protection and choose your countdown grace period.
- Set the phone down. It is now watching itself.
When it makes sense
- Working in public: your phone sits on the café table while you focus on the laptop.
- Shared spaces: dorms, offices, family living rooms — anywhere "borrowing" happens.
- Sleeping in transit: the phone on the tray table or seat next to you is covered while you doze.
What happens after a trigger
