Everyone has a spot where phones go to disappear: between couch cushions, inside a coat pocket, under a pile of laundry. Calling it from another phone works — if another phone is nearby and yours is not on silent. Clap detection removes both conditions. You clap twice, your phone hears you, and it starts ringing loudly enough to follow.
How clap detection works
A clap has a sharp, recognizable sound signature. An app listening through the microphone can pick that pattern out of normal room noise and treat it as a command. When Device Finder detects two claps, it plays a loud alarm through the speaker — it does not depend on your ringer, so silent mode does not stop it.
Device Finder only listens while your screen is off. That matters for two reasons: it does not interfere with calls or music while you are using the phone, and it keeps battery use low, because detection is not running when you obviously know where your phone is.
Setting it up
- Install Device Finder from the App Store and open it.
- Open the Clap Finder section and choose the alarm sound you want the phone to respond with.
- Choose your trigger — clap, whistle, a phrase like "Where's my phone?", or all of them.
- Tap Start and lock your phone. Detection is now armed.
To test it, put the phone face-down across the room and clap twice. You should hear the alarm within a moment. If your room is noisy, do a second test from the spot where you usually lose the phone — a couch or a bag muffles sound, and a test tells you how close you need to be.
Tips for reliable detection
- Clap crisply and twice. Two sharp claps are much easier to distinguish from background noise than one soft one.
- Record a custom trigger if claps in your home are common (kids, TV). A distinctive custom sound reduces false alarms.
- Leave detection on overnight. Since listening only runs while the screen is off, arming it at night costs little and covers the classic morning "where did I put it" moment.
