A Sleep Timer That Fades Music Out Automatically
Any timer can stop audio. The problem is how it stops. A hard cutoff is a sudden change in your sound environment, and sudden change is exactly what your sleeping brain is wired to notice — which is why people wake up seconds after their music stops. The fix is a fade: volume that ramps down over minutes, so the silence arrives too slowly to register.
Why the fade matters
During the first hour of sleep you cycle through light stages where you're easy to wake. A sound that has been present and then vanishes instantly creates the same alerting contrast as a sound suddenly appearing. Fading over 5–10 minutes dissolves the transition. By the time the room is silent, you've been asleep long enough that silence is just the new normal.
Choosing your timer length
- Fall asleep quickly (under 20 min): a 30-minute timer with a 5-minute fade is plenty.
- Average (20–40 min): 60 minutes with a 5-minute fade — the safe default.
- Slow to drift or anxious nights: 90–120 minutes with a 10-minute fade. Generous coverage removes the "what if it stops before I'm asleep" worry, which is itself keeping you up.
Fade window: 2, 5 or 10 minutes?
Shorter fades suit deep sleepers; longer fades suit light sleepers and anyone who wakes when audio changes. If you've ever been woken by your playlist ending, choose 10. There's no downside except a few extra minutes of quiet sound.
What to play on the timer
Steady, textureless sounds fade most gracefully — white noise and rain lose volume without losing character. Music with melody can sound odd as it gets quiet, because your brain tries to follow the tune. If you want music, choose ambient tracks without a strong melodic line. Timer, fade, and sounds in one screen
Zen Meditation's Sleep tab puts the timer (30–120 min), the fade window (last 2, 5 or 10 min), the sound, and the volume on a single screen — one glance confirms the whole night's plan. Free to start.
